Immediate priorities

Provide appropriate care, contact emergency services when needed, protect other children and notify parents or guardians according to the circumstances and applicable requirements.

Record objective facts

Document time, location, people present, observations, actions taken, notifications and available witnesses. Avoid speculation, blame or altering records after the fact.

Preserve evidence

Retain relevant video, photographs, equipment, attendance records, vehicle information, training records and communications according to legal advice and policy. Routine deletion systems may need to be suspended.

Notify the right parties

Licensing, law enforcement, child-protection agencies, parents and insurers have different reporting triggers. Follow mandatory-reporting law and policy notice provisions; do not delay a required report while investigating internally.

Do not promise coverage

Be compassionate without promising that a bill or claim is covered. Forward demands, attorney letters and agency notices promptly to the appropriate insurer and counsel.
